Onto the rest of it — Council's Pick My Park is back for round two, and this time it's your vote that decides where the money goes. Six reserves are shortlisted, voting's open now, and round one already put $915,000 of resident-directed funding into local parks. Full story below on how to have your say.
This week's Suburb Spotlight is Sandhurst — the golf estate suburb tucked between Skye and Carrum Downs that most of Frankston City drives past without ever turning in. There's a community market on this Sunday if you want an excuse to have a look.

Pick My Park Is Back — And This Time You're Choosing Where $1.8M Goes
Frankston City Council's Pick My Park program is back for round two, and it works differently to most council spending: residents vote on which local parks get the money, not the other way around.
Six reserves have made this round's shortlist — Myrtle, Cavill, Escarpment, Alicudi, Rotary and Burgess Reserves. Voting is open now via Engage Victoria and closes 4pm Monday 3 August. Whichever projects get the most community votes get built.
Round one already delivered $915,000 in resident-directed funding, matched by Council to bring the total local park investment to $1.83 million. It's a genuinely unusual way for a council to spend money — most capital works get decided in a boardroom, not a ballot.
What this means for you: If one of the six shortlisted reserves is near you, your vote directly decides what gets built there. Cast it before 4pm Monday 3 August at frankston.vic.gov.au

Council Freezes New Partnerships While It Tightens the Rules
Councillors voted unanimously at the 1 June meeting to develop a Strategic Partnerships Framework — and, until it's finished, officers can't sign Council up to any new external partnership or membership without a council resolution first. Council says there's currently no single formal process for how it enters, renews or exits these arrangements. Full story in Council Watch below.

This Week: Sandhurst
The Suburb Built Around a Golf Course
Sandhurst sits between Skye and Carrum Downs, and unlike most of Frankston City, it didn't grow up around a shopping strip or a train line — it grew up around two championship golf courses. The Sandhurst Club bought the land in the early 2000s and built the estate outward from the clubhouse. Around 5,200 people call it home.
It's an unusual setup for a Frankston suburb. Residents pay Council rates like everywhere else, but they also pay fees to one of two owners' corporations — Sandhurst Club east of McCormicks Road, or Sandarra to the west — which handle security, park upkeep and road maintenance directly, on top of what Council provides. There's a recycled water system, an active Auskick program on the mini oval near the clubrooms, and enough tech workers who set up shop from home that the estate got fibre broadband well before most of the municipality.
Sandhurst doesn't get its own postcode — it shares 3977 with Cranbourne, a hangover from before the suburb existed in its own right. Kids mostly go to school in Carrum Downs. There's no retail strip inside the estate itself, so like a lot of the city's newer suburbs, it leans on its neighbours for the everyday stuff.

Teen charged — Carrum Downs factory fire. A teenage boy has been charged after the keys to a Ford Raptor were allegedly stolen from a Burwood gym on 9 June, with the vehicle then allegedly driven to a factory on Brett Drive, Carrum Downs, and set alight — causing over $1 million in damage. Police are using the case as a reminder to keep car keys close or in a secure locker while at the gym. Source: Victoria Police. |

Serious collision — Langwarrin. Police are investigating a crash on Cranbourne-Frankston Road about 8:25pm, in which a motorcycle — travelling without lights on — struck a Toyota Yaris turning into a nearby car park. The 16-year-old rider was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries; the driver of the car stopped to render assistance. Reminder: e-scooter rules. With school holidays in full swing, a timely one — e-scooters are capped at 20km/h, allowed on shared and bike paths, and riders must be 16 or over and wear a helmet. Strategic Partnerships Framework — new partnerships frozen until it's finished
Councillors voted unanimously at the 1 June meeting to develop clearer rules for how Council enters, renews and exits partnerships and memberships with outside organisations — covering approvals, governance, renewal cycles and how Council manages lobbying and advocacy. Until the framework is done, officers can't sign off on any new external partnership without a council resolution. A councillor briefing is expected by September 2026. Council says the current process isn't formalised — this closes that gap.

Community Food Feature — Issue #9: Community Support Frankston
Not free food, but a genuinely useful stop if you're struggling with more than groceries. Community Support Frankston, at 35 Beach Street, runs a cluster of support services under one roof: the Bolton Clarke Homeless Persons Program, free Tax Help from July to October for people earning under $50,000, Orange Sky's free mobile laundry service, a Mental Health Legal Clinic, a Services Australia co-location, and free eye checks and glasses for low-income earners through the Australian College of Optometry.
Orange Sky's laundry service runs Wednesdays 11:30am–2pm and Thursdays 1:30–3:30pm. Reception can point you to whichever service fits.

Bus upgrade update — closing the loop. The Routes 781/784/785 changes we flagged a couple of issues back went live on 5 July as scheduled. The combined 20-minute frequency between Mornington and Frankston has been retained, Route 786 (Rye–St Andrews Beach) has been discontinued, and a new Route 886 between Hastings and Mornington has launched. "How awesome are the local bike trails — well done to the council for upkeeping such beautiful shared paths. I was so pleased to see an echidna digging around."
A nice change of pace after a few issues of bin gripes and pothole complaints. Fair credit where it's due — the shared paths through Frankston City are genuinely well kept, and an echidna sighting is a decent reminder of what's still hanging on out there.
